A pendulum is a mass (or bob) on the end of a string of negligible mass, which, when initially displaced, will swing back and forth under the influence of gravity over its central (lowest) point. The regular motion of a pendulum can be used for time keeping; pendulums are used to regulate timing.
The Foucault pendulum (pronounced /fu??ko?/ "foo-KOH"), or Foucault's pendulum, named after the French physicist Léon Foucault, was conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth.
